North’s Veerappan gets 6-yr term for poaching

Sansar Chandan, who is known as the 'Veerappan of North Indcia" was sentenced to six years in jail for poaching, according to the wildlife Protection Act.He was guilty of possessing a leopard skin, and was punished under Section 51 read with Section 49 (punishment for dealing in skins and materials of endangered species) of the Wildlife Protection Act. A fine of Rs 50,000 too was imposed, reports The Times Of India. |

At least 15 endangered Sumatran elephants have been shot or poisoned to death with cyanide laced fruit this year in Indonesia, marking a sharp rise over the previous year. The giant mammals were mostly killed by poachers for their ivory. The number killed in the past six months is equal to the total for the whole of 2008, reports Times of India. |

The forest department has accepted that the tiger population at Panna reserve has fallen, but it differs with locals and experts on the reasons for the disappearance of the big cats. Locals say the tigers had disappeared years ago, but the department was in denial. The Wildlife Institute of India, too, has said not more than one tiger is left in the core area. “We’ve got a picture of a tiger. There may be one more, but most of the tigers are gone,” said a WII scientist who didn’t want to be identified, writes Chetan Chauhan in the Hindustan Times. |
